Assessment & Examinations
Assessment at St. Xavier’s is there to help each child learn. It shows teachers and parents what a child has understood, and where a little more help is needed.
In the pre-primary classes
For our youngest children there are no formal examinations. Teachers observe each child during activities, play and class work, and follow their progress in language, numbers, hand control and social skills. This is the approach set out in the national curriculum framework for the early years, which regards tests and examinations as unsuitable at this age.
In Grades I and II
Assessment stays gentle. It rests mainly on the teacher’s observation, class work and oral work, and children are not ranked against one another.
In Grades III to V
Pupils are assessed through the year in line with CBSE guidelines. Class work, oral work, projects and written assessments are all taken into account, so that no single test decides how a child is doing.
In Grades VI and VII
In the middle school, written assessments in each subject take on a larger part, alongside projects and class work. Pupils learn how to revise, how to manage their time and how to set out their answers clearly – habits that prepare them for the senior classes.
Sharing progress with parents
Teachers discuss each child’s progress with parents at scheduled parent-teacher meetings, so that home and school can work together. See Progress Reports for what a report covers.
